In a sample of 61,829 families, the probability of having an additional child is higher in those families with all children of the same sex as compared to those families with children of both sexes. The Locus of Bimanual Skill Transfer
Subjects (N = 128) practiced a typing task with one hand while the other hand either grasped the table leg (experimental condition) or was free (control condition). Subsequently, the other hand showed savings in training in the control but not in the experimental condition. The abolition of transfer of training by engaging the fingers of the test hand in unrelated activity during training suggests that transfer is mediated by irradiation of the e…
Judgments of Semantic Stimuli as a Function of Context
It has been reported that contextual stimulation affects judgment of a stimulus ensemble when the judgmental language is relative, categorical, and/or arbitrary. The current study explored the effect of context on judgments of semantic stimuli. College students, 65 male and 80 female, gave magnitude estimations of expressions of amount, expressions of probability, size of noun referents, and enactive imagery value of verbs in Experiments 1 throug…
Lateral Asymmetry of Retroactive Inhibition in a Psychomotor Skill
Right-handed college students (N equals 160) received 10 practice trials on inverted-reversed printing with either the left or right hand followed by 10 additional trials with either the same or the other hand. Half the Ss then received 10 interpolated learning trials of inverted-but-nonreversed printing, while the other half of the Ss worked arithmetic problems. Two experiments with isopods, Armadillidium vulgare, were reported. In Experiment I, two groups of five Ss each learned to run a T maze to escape light and heat. Both original learning (OL), and relearning (RL) the next day, were to a criterion 9/10 correct.
