This article examines the lives of artefacts collected by physical anthropologist Aleš Hrdlička during his expeditions to Peru. In 1910 and 1913, Hrdlička travelled to the Andean nation to gather materials that could shed light on the peopling of the Americas, health and disease in pre-Columbian societies, and the purported racial 'types' of the region. Association of Cigarette Smoking With HIV Prognosis Among Women in the Haart Era
Objective. We assessed the association of cigarette smoking with the effectiveness of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) among low-income women. Methods. Data were analyzed from the Women’s Interagency HIV Study, a multisite longitudinal study up to 7.9 years for 924 women representing 72% of all women who initiated HAART between July 1, 1995, and September 30, 2003. The Womenʼs Interagency HIV Study
The Women's Interagency HIV Study comprises the largest U.S. cohort to date of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-seropositive women (N = 2,058) with a comparison cohort of seronegative women (N = 568). The methodology, training, and quality assurance activities employed are described. The study population, enrolled between October 1994 and November 1995 through six clinical consortia throughout the United States (totaling 23 sites) represents a …
A cohort study of the impact of perinatal drug use on prematurity in an inner-city population
Perinatal illicit drug use was determined by anonymously testing the urine of 1111 inner-city parturients. Fourteen percent tested positive, 11.5% for cocaine. As determined by self-report or by positive test results, 17% used drugs. Twenty-eight percent of low birthweights and 20% of premature births in this group were attributable to drug use. Risk of prematurity was reduced by a factor of 2 to 3 with adequate prenatal care. These data suggest …
Cervix and breast cancer incidence in immigrant Caribbean women
Cervix and breast cancer incidence in 1978-82 was computed for immigrant and United States-born Black women in Brooklyn, New York. Compared to the national SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results) rates, US-born and Haitian women had high rates of invasive cervical cancer, while English-speaking Caribbean immigrants had an average rate. A cohort study of the impact of perinatal drug use on prematurity in an inner-city population
Perinatal illicit drug use was determined by anonymously testing the urine of 1111 inner-city parturients. Fourteen percent tested positive, 11.5% for cocaine.
