Labour, leisure and love
Background : Livery yards are important in UK equine management, catering for over 60% of the UK’s horses. Decisions made by the managers of livery establishments shape the lives of horses and their owners; livery yard owners and managers (LYO/Ms) are therefore a highly important stakeholder in equine welfare. This study aimed to explore the experiences of LYO/Ms around yard set-up and management, and how yard managers make decisions around horse…
Validation of the brain injury associated visual impairment - impact questionnaire (Bivi-IQ)
The BIVI-IQ has been shown to be valid and practical for 'everyday' use by clinicians and researchers to monitor vision-related quality of life in stroke survivors with visual impairment
Making It Work
The COVID-19 pandemic forced rapid innovative change to healthcare delivery. Understanding the unique challenges faced by staff may contribute to different approaches when managing future pandemics. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 21 staff from a Community Mental Health Team in the North West of England, UK, three months after the first wave of the pandemic. Thematic analysis was used to examine data reporting the challenges arising wh…
Hidden in Plain Sight
Equine obesity is a major welfare concern in the UK, and the problem is thought to be increasing. Leisure horses are known to be most at risk of obesity, yet despite plenty of conjecture, the reasons for this are unknown. This study, therefore, aimed to establish the social and environmental factors which owners considered might contribute to levels of obesity in leisure horses in order to address the problem. This project used qualitative resear…
The Responsible Dog Owner
Policy and campaigning messages related to dog ownership and welfare center on the concept of responsible ownership. However, the perspectives and experiences of pet owners and how they perceive and perform their responsibilities has not been studied in depth. This qualitative study used conversations about owning and walking dogs in order to elucidate beliefs and views about responsibility in dog ownership. Data comprised 12 in-depth interviews …
Examining Factors Associated With Program Completion Among Women Participants in a Statewide Drug Court Program
The study purpose was to examine factors affecting women in completing drug court. Participants were 212 women drug court participants selected via stratified random sampling (by county) from the larger Kentucky Drug Court participant population. Various secondary data sources were used (e.g., participant assessment, Management Information System), and multivariate logistic regression examining 17 independent variables showed 4 variables were sig…
How Political Cultures Produce Different Antibiotic Policies in Agriculture
The purpose of this article is to provide an understanding of how different countries formulate and regulate antibiotic use in animals raised for human consumption. A comparative case study was undertaken, analysing historical documents from the 1950s to the 1990s from the UK, the first country to produce a scientific report on the public health risks of agricultural antibiotic use; and Sweden, the first country to produce legislation on the grow…
I Walk My Dog Because It Makes Me Happy
Dog walking is a popular everyday physical activity. Dog owners are generally more active than non-owners, but some rarely walk with their dog. The strength of the dog-owner relationship is known to be correlated with dog walking, and this qualitative study investigates why. Twenty-six interviews were combined with autoethnography of dog walking experiences. Dog walking was constructed as "for the dog", however, owners represented their dog's nee…
Pets, Purity and Pollution
In the United Kingdom, following the emergence of Seoul hantavirus in pet rat owners in 2012, public health authorities tried to communicate the risk of this zoonotic disease, but had limited success. To explore this lack of engagement with health advice, we conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews with pet rat owners and analysed them using a grounded theory approach. The findings from these interviews suggest that rat owners construct the…
Understanding Differences Between Heroin and Other Drug Users Among Individuals Entering Treatment
Heroin use rates have dramatically increased across the country in recent years. Kentucky has been particularly affected due in part to policies aimed at restricting the availability of prescription painkillers, resulting in making heroin more available and cheap. This study investigated differences between heroin users and nonheroin users in their social and demographic characteristics, previous substance use history, criminal justice involvemen…
A Preliminary Investigation of Risks for Adverse Outcomes of Relationship Seeking on Social Network Sites (SNS)
In contrast to younger populations, little attention has been paid to the increase in seniors using Internet-based venues to find relationships and the potential risk for adverse outcomes this poses. This study examined data collected via an online survey from 45 ethnically diverse women aged 50+ "seeking relationships" on MySpace. The majority of women reported a relationship with someone they met online (85%). They also reported experiencing ad…

Older men's experiences of community-based health checks in Knowsley, UK
A study using both qualitative and quantitative methods was undertaken to examine the impact of community-based health checks on men in Knowsley, UK. Opportunistic screening for Chlamydia in general practice
Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common curable bacterial sexually transmitted infection in the UK. The infection is asymptomatic in up to 70% of women, and if untreated, can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and infertility. Chlamydial infection can be diagnosed using urine testing and is easily treated with antibiotics. In 1999, the UK Department of Health funded a pilot opportunistic Chlamydia screening programme in two h…
Beyond Language in Indigenous Language Immersion Schooling
At the outset I (Stairs) want to describe my relationship to the indigenous educators with whom I work and the nature of the account which follows. I have worked with the Mohawk community and school which focuses this paper over many years as consultant, researcher, resource provider, among other forms of being there, but most centrally as co-reflector with several key "culture-makers" I have come to know. Our co-reflections share these culture-m…
Juggling and Dealing
In conventional diagrams of the new service delivery process, assessment of need is linked to purchase by a single line or arrow; the implication is that purchase follows more or less logically and directly from assessment. This paper focuses on the complex creative work that goes on in the "space" between assessment of need and purchase of service, and the changing influences on that work. "Purchase" is deconstructed to reveal the complex proces…

An Early Australian Short Story by Harpur
Some of the chief characteristics of one type of short story commonly said to belong to the 'Lawson' or 'Bulletin' tradition may be found in an Australian story printed in the Sydney journal, The Weekly Register, on 30 August 1845. The short story 'The Importance of a Rhyme or A Story of the Old Dock-Yard', is probably the most light-hearted thing written by the poet Charles Harpur, and is certainly the only prose piece he wrote without some over…
Emerson and Charles Harpur
On close examination, Harpur's general poetics are certainly Wordsworthian (if Wordsworth's name is used as a focus-point in English literature for a complex set of slowly-developing traits), but in his mysticism, which is an important aspect of his more substantial poems, Harpur is much more Coleridgean, or more precisely, Emersonian. Despite his admiration for Wordsworth, expressed most ardently in two sonnets, he found Wordsworth's 'principles…
Harpur’s Notes and Kendall’s Bell Birds
ARLES HARPUR (1813-1868), a Currency Lad poet of convict parentage, is at present receiving considerable attention from students of Australian literature, and it is expected that collections of his poems and prose writings will shortly be available to the public. Much of his work can be found in Sydney newspapers and journals published between 1833 and a few years after his death, as well as in the comprehensive collection of manuscripts held in …
