Yin, Kenneth J. Mystical Forest
Mystical Forest: Collected Poems and Short Stories of Dungan Ethnographer Ali Dzhon,* introduced and translated by Kenneth J. Yin, opens the world of a Dungan writer from Kyrgyzstan to global audiences. Seeking an ‘Ideal Place’ in a Nuosu Origin Epic
The Book of Origins ( hnewo tepyy ) is a major ritual text of the Nuosu, a subgroup of the official Yi (Yizu) ethnic group of southwest China. The narrative, existing in both written and oral variants, is part of a living tradition, especially among priests ( bimo ) and folk singers, in the Liangshan Yi autonomous region in Sichuan province and nearby Yunnan province. This chapter introduces the poetry of Aku Wuwu (aka Luo Qingchun), a member of the Yi ethnic minority group in ethnically diverse southwest China. A Description of "Jiangjing" (Telling Scriptures) Services in Jingjiang, China
Jiangjing (telling scriptures) is a local style of oral prosimetric narrative performed in ritual contexts in the area of Jingjiang on the north bank of the Yangzi River in Jiangsu Province, China. The style is a local expression of a once popular form of oral narrative known as baojuan (precious scrolls or precious volumes) that traditionally had associations with popular Buddhism and other beliefs.
