New Approaches to the Study of Social Inclusion of Poor Children and Youth
This thematic issue addresses one of the most important social and political challenges worldwide: The social inclusion of poor children and youth. Deviant Bodies and Suitable Clothes
Suitable clothes are clothes that make the body socially accepted. The theme of this article concerns what people with deviant bodies do when suitable clothes are difficult to find; clothes that make their bodies fit in in everyday social contexts. Based on interviews with Norwegian men and women, the focus is on those people who have bodies that deviate from the present Western bodily ideals of thinness, fitness and no deviances. Friendship and gender identity among girls in a multicultural setting in Oslo
Based in ethnographic fieldwork during 2010-2014, this article discusses friendship ties and construction of gender identity among girls in a multicultural context in Oslo. The article shows how gender construction is influenced by ethnicity, religion and sexuality. The Social Importance of Consumption for Inclusion and Exclusion Among Children in a Multi-Ethnic Suburb of Oslo
This article discusses the relationship between social networks and consumption for inclusion among peers in a multicultural suburb of Oslo called Dal. Theoretically informed by network analysis of strong and weak ties, consumption as communication and the concept of economy of dignity, the article shows in detail the things and activities which are important for girls and boys.
