Assessing culturally inclusive instructional design in online learning
The impact of background music on learners
This meta-analysis integrates outcomes of experimental and quasi-experimental studies to analyze the effects of background music (BM) on learning. Research articles, dissertations, and conference proceedings published in or before 2021 were examined. Seventy-one effect sizes from 47 studies were integrated using a random-effects model and subgroup analyses. Five key results were found: (a) a small and positive mean effect size ( d = 0.314) in fav…
Inventory of Complicated Spiritual Grief 2.0 (ICSG 2.0)
Spirituality has long served as a source of solace for many grievers following a loss. For other mourners, whose bereavement experience has been significantly challenged by struggles in their relationship with God and/or their faith community, the opposite is true. Complicated spiritual grief (CSG) is a spiritual crisis following the loss of a loved one. To assess CSG in samples of bereaved adults, a simple-to-use, multidimensional measure of spi…
The Coping Assessment for Bereavement and Loss Experiences (Cable)
The authors present the development and validation of the Coping Assessment for Bereavement and Loss Experiences (CABLE), the first instrument designed to assess a range of potentially constructive strategies for coping with grief following the death of a loved one. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis with an international sample of bereaved adults ( N = 844) yielded a six-factor, 28-item structure. Use of this validated, clinically usef…
Mathematics Teachers’ Learning
This study examines the role of several key features of professional development (PD) in bringing about changes in teachers’ mathematical knowledge for teaching. Artifacts (e.g., PD tasks, materials, and agendas) of the PD activities completed by 542 teachers in 21 different Mathematics and Science Partnership programs were coded based on the core features of PD identified in earlier literature. Multilevel analyses examined whether the programs’ …
Assessing the needs of training on inclusive education for public school administrators
This study assessed the needs of urban school leaders for special education preparation in a large public school district in the USA in order to assist the school administrators with improving their knowledge and skills for providing appropriate services to students with disabilities and their families to support inclusive education. The needs survey was created based on the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC 2009) standards for school adminis…
An Investigation of Counselor Educators' Attitudes Toward Evidence-Based Practices
Evidence-based practices (EBPs) receive little attention in counselor education curricula despite the ethical obligation for counselor educators to teach EBPs to counseling students. This study investigates counselor educators' attitudes toward EBPs along with perceived barriers to the inclusion of EBPs in counselor education curricula
The Effects of Service-Learning Participation on Pre-Internship Educators’ Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy
This study aimed to determine if pre-internship teacher education students’ participation in service-learning activities in K-12 classrooms would significantly affect their teachers’ sense of efficacy (TSE). A secondary focus sought to determine if one type of service-learning activity (e.g., whole-class instruction) would affect teacher efficacy more than another (e.g., small-group tutoring). Findings revealed that pre-internship service-learner…
A Psychometric Study of the Community Service Self-Efficacy Scale for Evaluation of Service-Learning Programs
This study cross-validated the psychometric properties of the 10-item Community Service Self-Efficacy Scale (CSSES) for evaluation of service-learning programs. Three independent samples consisting of undergraduate students and high school students were used to study the validity of the scale. An exploratory factor analysis on the scale yielded strong construct validity with a clear one-factor structure. The results from a confirmatory factor ana…
