Shifting Solidarities
This chapter looks at how workers expressed solidarity and formed alliances to navigate their working and living conditions in the 1940s and 1950s Gulf. We see changing workers’ solidarities when we compare work stoppages in Iran, complaints of human rights violations in Bahrain and hunger strikes in Aden. At each of these sites, I consider the claims made by workers, with whom workers formed alliances and how workers mobilised. This focus brings…

The New Zealand horror-comedy What We Do in the Shadows (2014) emerged at a time when contemporary cinema had been showing a renewed and sustained interest in vampire fiction. Whilst it was not the first to offer a humorous reworking of vampire mythology, this parody is striking for it comes from a strong tradition in New Zealand cinema of disrupting genres, an approach that can be observed, for instance, in Peter Jackson’s early work. The muscled, independent woman found in action-orientated cinema is a problematic figure that confronts customary perceptions of masculine and feminine representation and gender roles.
