Gender and perceived power in manager—subordinate relations
A field study in three organizations investigated gender differences in subordinates' perceptions of managers' power. For 55 female and 55 male managers matched on position power, one subordinate per manager ( N = 110, half male and half female) completed a questionnaire. Perceived reward, legitimate, expert and referent power were all intercorrelated, but unrelated to coercive power. Male and female managers did not show the expected differences…

Changing expectations
Initial and 5-year follow-up interviews were conducted with 213 residents of the host community for a nuclear power plant. The purpose was to determine possible changes in attitudes toward the plant and expectations about potential outcomes associated with construction. Large negative changes in attitudes toward the plant were noted and were accompanied most notably by decreased expectations of positive outcomes. The structure of the expectations…
The relationship of avowed life satisfaction to public acceptance of and expectations about a nuclear power plant
As part of a longitudinal study of the social and psychological effects of a nuclear plant in Hartsville, Tennessee, this study examined the relationship between avowed life satisfaction and acceptance of a nuclear plant and perceptions about the likelihood of its potential effects. Subjects were 288 residents of the Hartsville area who were privately interviewed in August, 1975. Results indicated no differences between respondents with low- and …
Community attitudes toward a proposed nuclear power generating facility as a function of expected outcomes
This study examined the relationship between attitudes toward a proposed nuclear power generating facility and the outcomes expected to accompany it. In a survey of 350 residents of a small rural community, approximately 2/3 expressed favorable attitudes toward the proposed nuclear plant. A principal components factor analysis of the anticipated likelihoods of outcomes of the plant revealed five factors: hazards, economic growth, lower costs, soc…

Interpersonal relationships and personal space
An experimental study of crowding
This study hypothesized that stress in high room density, or crowding, depends on interpersonal disturbances such as intrusion and goal blocking. High room density was expected to intensify individual reactions to these disturbances. In a 2 X 2 X 2 design, groups of six male college students containing three subjects and three confederates were placed in a large or small room. Subjects and confederates interacted in pairs; confederates introduced…
Leader esteem for the least preferred co-worker score, training, and effectiveness
A laboratory experiment supported Fiedler's Contingency Model analysis of leadership training. The effect of leadership training on group performance was contingent on leadership style, that is, the leader's relation to his least preferred co-worker (LPC). Training improved the performance of high LPC leaders, but was detrimental to the performance of groups with low LPC leaders. High intelligence leaders profited more from training than low inte…
Field study of territorial behavior and dominance
The Stability of Deviant Behavior Over Time
An earlier article by Clarizio examined studies of the stability of deviant behavior. This issue is crucial in evaluating the claims of two competing theories of mental illness. Existing studies of psychiatric symptoms over time appear provisionally to suggest that unlabeled deviant behavior is transitory and labeled deviant behavior is stable. Although the studies are crude and inconclusive, the existing weight of evidence may be interpreted as …
