The Stability of Deviant Behavior Over Time

An earlier article by Clarizio examined studies of the stability of deviant behavior. This issue is crucial in evaluating the claims of two competing theories of mental illness. Existing studies of psychiatric symptoms over time appear provisionally to suggest that unlabeled deviant behavior is transitory and labeled deviant behavior is stable. Although the studies are crude and inconclusive, the existing weight of evidence may be interpreted as supporting labeling theory rather than psychiatric theory
