  • A Tanzimat for TSA

Mark Stein•ARTICLE•Journal of the Ottoman and…•2023

A Tanzimat for TSA Mark Stein (bio) On a very rainy day in June 2012 I had lunch with Amy Mills in Kuzguncuk.1 I was in Istanbul with students on a short-term study abroad program. The students had read Amy's work on Kuzguncuk in class and we were lucky enough to get Amy to give us a tour of the neighborhood, unluckily in the pouring rain. Over lunch the conversation turned to the Turkish Studies Association. Amy had become Secretary-Treasurer th…

  • The World Federation of ADHD International Consensus Statement

    Open Access•Stephen V Faraone, Tobias Banaschewski et al.•ARTICLE•Neuroscience & Biobehavioral…•2021

BACKGROUND: Misconceptions about ADHD stigmatize affected people, reduce credibility of providers, and prevent/delay treatment. To challenge misconceptions, we curated findings with strong evidence base. METHODS: We reviewed studies with more than 2000 participants or meta-analyses from five or more studies or 2000 or more participants. We excluded meta-analyses that did not assess publication bias, except for meta-analyses of prevalence. For net…

Open Access•Brian Mello, Mark L Stein et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Middle East Studies•2021

This essay explores insights from our experiences teaching undergraduates a set of paired history and political science courses on protest and revolution in the Middle East. Working in groups, students developed simulations of key moments of revolution or protest explored during the courses. The simulation assignment was designed to engage students in an active learning setting and as a shared assignment across both courses. The most interesting …

  • Postcolonial Translocations

Marga Munkelt, Markus Schmitz et al.•BOOK•Postcolonial Translocations•2013•Citada por: 2

The sites from which postcolonial cultural articulations develop and the sites at which they are received have undergone profound transformations within the last decades. This book traces the accelerating emergence of cultural crossovers and overlaps in a global perspective and through a variety of disciplinary approaches. It starts from the premise that after the ‘spatial turn’ human action and cultural representations can no longer be grasped a…

  • A culture of mania

    Open Access•Mark Stein•ARTICLE•Organization•2011

In this theoretically informed study I explore the broader cultural changes that created the conditions for the credit crisis of 2008. Drawing on psychoanalysis and its application to organizational and social dynamics, I develop a theoretical framework around the notion of a manic culture, comprised of four aspects: denial; omnipotence; triumphalism; and over-activity. I then apply this to the credit crisis and argue that the events of 2008 were…

  • The Brooklyn Traffic Real-Time Ambient Pollutant Penetration and Environmental Dispersion (B-TRAPPED) field study methodology

Jurgen Osterhammel, Jennifer Richmond-Bryant et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Environmental Monitoring•2009

The Brooklyn Traffic Real-Time Ambient Pollutant Penetration and Environmental Dispersion (B-TRAPPED) field study examined indoor and outdoor exposure to traffic-generated air pollution by studying the individual processes of generation of traffic emissions, transport and dispersion of air contaminants along a roadway, and infiltration of the contaminants into a residence. Real-time instrumentation was used to obtain highly resolved time-series c…

  • Oedipus Rex at Enron

    Open Access•Mark Stein•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2007•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 24

This article is intended to contribute to our understanding of the December 2001 collapse of Enron. The existing literature on Enron's demise falls largely into two broad areas, involving either `micro' psychological explanations or `macro' accounts that emphasize the workplace and its environment; this article is an exploratory study that focuses on a new interpretation which links the two areas more closely together. It is proposed that Enron's…

    Open Access•Mark Stein•CHAPTER•Discourses of Slavery and Abolition•2004

None of his predecessors asserts his or her identity as a Briton more fully than Equiano. ... he adopts the cultural, political, religious, and social values that enable him to be accepted as British. Yet he always retains his perspective as an African who has been deracinated and thus has the advantage of knowing his adopted British culture from both the inside and the outside, a perspective that W. E. B. Du Bois calls the double consciousness o…

  • The critical period of disasters

    Open Access•Mark Stein•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2004•Citada por: 14•Referencias: 20

The purpose of this article is to deepen our understanding of the period during which a disaster unfolds, here called the ‘critical period’. Previous research has shown cases in which sense-making is essential for survival during this period, but it is argued here that there are other cases in which sense-making compounds the problems. Drawing on psychoanalytic theory, the capacity for anxiety toleration is postulated as a moderating variable tha…

  • Unbounded Irrationality

    Open Access•Mark Stein•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2003•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 19

This article focuses on the near collapse of the highly prestigious hedge-fund Long Term Capital Management (LTCM) in September 1998, causing widespread fears that its demise may lead to global financial meltdown. Explanations pivoting on the idea of bounded rationality - that rationally functioning organizations may collapse because of a lack of information or the capacity to process such information - are found not to apply. The article postula…

Envy has the potential for substantial destructiveness in social systems. Despite its fundamental place in the Kleinian psychoanalytic study of individuals, for several decades, envy has been virtually excluded from psychoanalytic studies of social systems. This paper focuses on this omission, arguing that the Kleinian school established a paradigm focusing on 'social systems as a defence against anxiety'. The implicit delimiting of this paradigm…

  • Women in the Ottoman Empire

Mark L Stein, Mark Stein et al.•REVIEW•Journal of the American Oriental…•2000

This collection of articles by 14 Middle East historians is a pathbreaking work in the history of Middle Eastern women prior to the contemporary era. The collection seeks to begin the task of reconstructing the history of (Muslim) women's experience in the middle centuries of the Ottoman era, between the mid-seventeenth century and the early nineteenth, prior to hegemonic European involvement in the region and prior to the modernizing reforms' in…
