Prediction of corneal astigmatism based on corneal tomography after femtosecond laser arcuate keratotomy using a pix2pix conditional generative adversarial network
Purpose: This study aimed to develop a deep learning model to generate a postoperative corneal axial curvature map of femtosecond laser arcuate keratotomy (FLAK) based on corneal tomography using a pix2pix conditional generative adversarial network (pix2pix cGAN) for surgical planning. Methods: A total of 451 eyes of 318 nonconsecutive patients were subjected to FLAK for corneal astigmatism correction during cataract surgery. Paired or single ant…
Influence of Family Environment on the Scientific Fitness Literacy of Preschool and School Children in China
Scientific fitness literacy (SFL) is a holistic concept based on physical literacy but has a smaller scope and is more specific to exercise and scientific fitness. We developed an instrument to assess SFL and explored the differences and similarities in the effects of the home environment on children's SFL. Data from a nationwide stratified random sample of children were analyzed using multiple linear regression. SFL scores were significantly low…
A cluster randomised trial of cookstove interventions to improve infant health in Ghana
Introduction Household air pollution from solid fuel combustion for cooking and heating is a leading cause of childhood morbidity and mortality worldwide. We hypothesised that clean cooking interventions delivered during pregnancy would improve child health. Methods We conducted a cluster randomised trial in rural Ghana to test whether providing pregnant women liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cookstoves or improved biomass cookstoves would reduce pe…
Predictors of Urinary Pyrethroid and Organophosphate Compound Concentrations among Healthy Pregnant Women in New York
Our study aimed to investigate dietary and non-dietary predictors of exposure to pyrethroids, organophosphates pesticides and 2,4-D herbicide in two cohorts of pregnant women in New York City: 153 women from the Thyroid Disruption and Infant Development (TDID) cohort and 121 from the Sibling/Hermanos Cohort(S/H). Baseline data on predictors were collected from the women at time of recruitment. We used three different modeling strategies to addres…

Unmet Mental Health Care Needs among Asian Americans 10–11 Years After Exposure to the World Trade Center Attack
This study investigated the prevalence of unmet mental health care needs (UMHCN) and their associated factors among 2344 Asian Americans directly exposed to the World Trade Center (WTC) attack 10-11 years afterwards. Given the pervasive underutilization of mental health services among Asians, their subjective evaluation of unmet needs could provide more nuanced information on disparities of service. We used the WTC Health Registry data and found …
Mental Health Service Use among Asian Americans Five to Six Years after Exposure to the World Trade Center Attack
This study uses World Trade Center Health Registry data, based on Andersen’s health-care model, to investigate 2,557 Asians’ mental health service use and associated factors 5–6 years after the World Trade Center attack, compared against 32,111 non-Hispanic white participants. We find that Asians had a lower proportion of service use (15.76 vs. 26.60 percent) than white people. A previous mental health diagnosis and perceived and evaluated mental…
Factors Related to the Probable PTSD after the 9/11 World Trade Center Attack among Asian Americans
Posttraumatic stress disorder in the short and medium term following the World Trade Center attack among Asian Americans
This study investigated patterns of probable posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and their predictors among 2,431 Asian American and 31,455 non‐Hispanic White World Trade Center (WTC) Registry participants 2–3 years and 5–6 years after the WTC attack. Participants were divided into four PTSD pattern groups: resilient, remitted, delayed onset, and chronic. Asians had a lower proportion in the resilient group (76.5% vs. 79.8%), a higher proportion…

Adolescent Substance Use and Other Illegal Behaviors and Racial Disparities in Criminal Justice System Involvement
We used data from a national survey to examine arrest rate disparities between African American and White adolescents (aged 12–17 years; n = 6725) in relation to drug-related and other illegal behaviors. African American adolescents were less likely than Whites to have engaged in drug use or drug selling, but were more likely to have been arrested. Racial disparities in adolescent arrest appear to result from differential treatment of minority yo…
Ecstasy Use and Associated Risk Factors Among Asian-American Youth
This study examined ecstasy use and associated risk and protective factors among Asian American youth. Data from 996 Asian American adolescents and 1,108 Asian American young adults were used. Ecstasy use was relatively common among Asian American youth. Among adolescents, it was associated with older age, poor parent-child communication, having been approached by drug sellers, living in a metropolitan area, and positive attitudes toward substanc…
Excessive Liquidity and Bank Lending in China
This paper analyzes two contending views of money and excess liquidity at both the theoretical and the practical levels. We relate the analysis to China's skyrocketing credit expansion in 2009 and its relationship with the housing market boom. The conventional view is that such a bubble is highly dangerous and is largely caused by great sums of "excess liquidity," which, in turn, induced Chinese banks to lend funds. This supposedly fueled the fir…
