The Algerian filmmaker Merzak Allouache has made a series of films that describe the formations of masculinity in Algeria of the post-Independence period. This article examines a film trilogy by Moncef Dhouib in light of contemporary image production in Tunisian society. The analysis is based on a relation between the ideological production of the image by the state, on the one hand, and oppositional images of religious and mystical practices, on the other.
