Droysen, Johann Gustav: Geschichte des Hellenismus

In Greek myths of origin, (etymologically probably “to possess the land since time immemorial,” only secondarily: “sprang from the land itself”) in the narrow sense of the word signified a person neither begotten nor born by parents, but “earthborn” ( ), such as Erichthonios in Athens or the Spartoi (“sown‐men”), who, as completed warriors, sprung from the dragon's teeth sown by Kadmos (Kühr 2006: 109–12).
