This chapter discusses the development of Roman historical writing, which began around the end of the third century BC, when the senator Quintus Fabius Pictor composed a history of Rome. It details how dramatic and critical events influenced Roman authors; Greek historiography as model and criterion; the historical culture of the populus Romanus; readership of historical works; and the absorption of the annalistic form into Roman historical prose writing.
