Annemieke Van Drenth, Mineke Van Essen•ARTICLE•Paedagogica Historica•2011

  • The ambiguity of professing gender

Annemieke Van Drenth, Mineke Van Essen•ARTICLE•Paedagogica Historica•2008•Citada por: 1

In this paper the concept of gender script is applied to examine the cases of two women educationists trying to construct a professional “self” in confrontation with gender scripts that constantly recited meanings of gender, in particular of femininity. The research focus is on the period 1890–1940, when in the Netherlands, like abroad, New Education became influential, also in the developing field of Child Studies, in which women educationists w…

  • No Issue, No Problem? Co-education in Dutch Secondary Physical Education during the Twentieth Century

    Mineke Van Essen•ARTICLE•Gender and Education•2003•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 8

This article places the current state of Dutch co-education in physical education into a longitudinal perspective. Occasionally, comparisons are made with Germany and England. The dominant, twentieth-century, co-educational tradition in the Netherlands--including its pragmatic argumentation-- has influenced educational ideals, as well as school practice, with respect to physical education. Due to a historical lack of fundamental discussions about…

Annemieke Van Drenth, Mineke Van Essen•ARTICLE•Paedagogica Historica•2003•Referencias: 22

Based on a theoretical framework in which women's historical agency is set against the background of both domesticity and professionalism, this paper compares women's pioneering roles in education in the United States and the United Kingdom with the tradition of schooling in Germany and the Netherlands. This article reveals some basic similarities between them. These pioneering roles are partly related to the concept of domesticity insofar as the…

  • New’ Girls and Traditional Womanhood. Girlhood and Education in the Netherlands in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Century ∗

    Mineke Van Essen•ARTICLE•Paedagogica Historica•1993•Citada por: 1

The schooldays of Dutch upper‐middle and middle‐class adolescent girls in the nineteenth and twentieth century are related to identities of girlhood, with special attention to the question as to when and how girls entered the adult world. In the first half of the nineteenth century, leaving childhood meant entering the female world. After 1860, partly due to new ideas on girls’ education, girlhood became a distinctive period in life between child…
