Sites of Contact and Models of Change
This Special Issue of Transactions of the Philological Society grew out of a Symposium held in November 2023 at St John's College, Cambridge, in honour of our friend and colleague, Peter Matthews, who died on 7 April 2023. Both the Symposium and the Special Issue were commissioned by the Council of the Philological Society in his memory

Grammaticalization as standardly conceived is a change whereby an item develops from a lexical to a grammatical or functional meaning, or from being less to more grammatical. In this article we show that this can only be part of the story; for a full account we need to understand the syntactic structures into which grammaticalizing elements fit and how they too develop.
