  • The Relation Between Elementary Teachers’ Awareness of Schoolwide Response to Intervention Components for Reading and Self-Efficacy with Data-Based Decision Making

Wilhelmina Van Dijk, Jennifer Stewart et al.•ARTICLE•Reading & Writing Quarterly•2026

Response to Intervention (RTI) implementation can provide teachers with collective opportunities to learn about data-based decision making (DBDM) and increase their self-efficacy around this process. This study explores teacher awareness of RTI for reading implementation and its relation to self-efficacy for DBDM. Survey data comprised 1,000 teachers in 63 elementary schools across 12 states. Administrators of these 63 schools were interviewed us…

  • Measuring Elementary Student Reading Gain in the Context of School-Implemented Multitiered Systems of Support

Open Access•Stephanie Al Otaiba, Wilhelmina Van Dijk et al.•ARTICLE•Remedial and Special Education•2026

There is limited research with mixed results about student reading gains in Grades 1 to 5 within typical school-implemented Response to Intervention (RTI). As part of a larger study, we used school-administered screening data on a widely used computer-adaptive test (Measures of Academic Progress) to describe reading gains across one academic year. We observed relatively faster growth in the first grade than in the later grades. We found stronger …

  • Special Education Researchers’ Knowledge, Attitudes, and Reported Use of Open Practices

Open Access•Jesse Irvan Fleming, Sarah Emily Wilson et al.•ARTICLE•Remedial and Special Education•2025

Despite calls for open science reforms in special education research, little is known about the perceptions or practices of special education researchers regarding open science. In this study, we modified the Open Science Survey to conduct a preliminary examination of the knowledge, attitudes, perceived norms, and behavioral intent of 155 special education researchers for three open practices: preregistering studies, posting preprints, and sharin…

  • Decrypting the Codes

Open Access•Garret J Hall, Wilhelmina Van Dijk et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology in the Schools•2025

Relations of reading and math skills are well‐documented. Using open randomized reading intervention data, we examined a reading intervention's impact on math fluency and problem‐solving as well as the mechanisms of reading intervention's relation to math fluency. Twenty‐eight teachers and 511 first‐grade students (82% White, 6% Hispanic, 53% Female, Age M[SD] = 6.7[0.45]) were randomized to reading treatment or a math intervention control group.…

  • Educational experiences of U.S. children during the 2020–2021 school year in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic

    Open Access•Rachelle M Johnson, Callie W Little et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2024•Citada por: 1

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is a historic event impacting children around the globe. Prior research on the educational experiences of children during the COVID-19 pandemic focused almost exclusively on spring 2020. This article extends this literature past the initial shock of spring 2020, capturing the first full school year (2020-2021) during the COVID-19 pandemic. This registered report study utilized a national sample of …

  • Data Sharing for Randomized Controlled Trials in Social Work

Open Access•Ashley A Edwards, Wilhelmina Van Dijk et al.•ARTICLE•Research on Social Work Practice•2023•Citada por: 2

Sharing data publicly can provide numerous benefits to the data owner, data user, as well as the social work research community as a whole. Given the time and resources required to collect data in randomized controlled trials, gleaning the maximum amount of information from this data is highly desirable. Data sets considered to be exhausted by the primary research team often have valuable information that can be used by researchers with different…

  • A How-to Guide for Open-Science Practices in Special Education Research

Open Access•Bryan G Cook, Jesse Irvan Fleming et al.•ARTICLE•Remedial and Special Education•2022

Open-science reforms, which aim to increase credibility and access of research, have the potential to benefit the research base in special education, as well as practice and policy informed by that research base. Awareness of open science is increasing among special education researchers. However, relatively few researchers in the field have experience using multiple open-science practices, and few practical guidelines or resources have been tail…

  • Assessing Measurement Invariance Across Multiple Groups

Open Access•Wilhelmina Van Dijk, Christopher Schatschneider et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2022

Complex research questions often need large samples to obtain accurate estimates of parameters and adequate power. Combining extant data sets into a large, pooled data set is one way this can be accomplished without expending resources. Measurement invariance (MI) modeling is an established approach to ensure participant scores are on the same scale. There are two major problems when combining independent data sets through MI. First, sample sizes…

  • Using Twins to Assess What Might Have Been

Open Access•Wilhelmina Van Dijk, Cynthia U Norris et al.•ARTICLE•Research on Social Work Practice•2022

Randomized control trials are considered the pinnacle for causal inference. In many cases, however, randomization of participants in social work research studies is not feasible or ethical. This paper introduces the co-twin control design study as an alternative quasi-experimental design to provide evidence of causal mechanisms when randomization is not possible. This method maximizes the genetic and environmental sameness between twins who are d…

  • Open Science in Education Sciences

Open Access•Wilhelmina Van Dijk, Christopher Schatschneider et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Learning Disabilities•2021

The Open Science movement has gained considerable traction in the last decade. The Open Science movement tries to increase trust in research results and open the access to all elements of a research project to the public. Central to these goals, Open Science has promoted five critical tenets: Open Data, Open Analysis, Open Materials, Preregistration, and Open Access. All Open Science elements can be thought of as extensions to the traditional way…
