  • Melding technologies? Shipbuilding around the Indian Ocean after the arrival of European ships

    Open Access•Richard W Unger•ARTICLE•International Journal of Maritime…•2024•Citada por: 1

When Portuguese sailors confirmed that there was an all-sea route to South Asia from Europe, they introduced new ship designs and building methods to the Indian Ocean World. They found sophisticated maritime skills and a long history of trade over water, both local and long distance. The meeting of the two successful technologies led to some borrowing of different methods and materials, and European use of vessels of Asian design. There were case…

  • Empire and economy in the premodern Indian Ocean, 1400–1800

    Open Access•Richard W Unger•ARTICLE•International Journal of Maritime…•2024

The maritime history of the Indian Ocean in the years from 1400 to 1800 is very different from that of the Atlantic. Examining the two uncritically can, and does, lead to a misunderstanding of the practices and institutions – called empires generally, as if they were the same – that dominated in Asia and the Americas in the period. A group of six invited scholars examine different aspects of contact between Europeans and Asians, which stretched f…

    Open Access•Richard W Unger•ARTICLE•TSEG/ Low Countries Journal of…•2022•Referencias: 1

Beer taxes were long a significant source of government revenue in northern Europe. In Holland the income from beer taxes went into long-term decline from 1650 onward. In England the take remained more stable. In both, beer produced a falling share of total revenue as expenses increased in an era of frequent and increasingly costly wars. The fiscal policies pursued in reaction to beer contributing a declining share of total government income led,…

  • Channelling violence at sea

    Open Access•Richard W Unger•ARTICLE•International Journal of Maritime…•2019

Certain late medieval changes in government practices, influenced by political developments and technological changes at sea, led to increasing limitations to acts of violence on European oceans and seas. The motivation of states became more overtly economic through the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. From around 1650 the expansion in trade, and most especially long distance trade, led to changes in the role, composition and size of na…

    Open Access•Richard W Unger•ARTICLE•Journal of History•2018

A comparison of energy consumption in Canada and eight European countries from 1870 to 2000 reveals similarities in the progression from one principal energy source to the next. There are differences in timing of shifts and so differences in the shares of energy sources at any one time. More striking is a dramatic divergence between Canada and the European states in per person energy consumption and in energy intensity. Testing obvious explanatio…

    Richard W Unger•ARTICLE•Speculum•2015•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 24

Henri Pirenne (1863–1935), the renowned Belgian medieval historian, in his interpretation of the early Middle Ages married commerce to communication and to the politics of empire. He enjoyed two things all scholars lust after: someone to do his footnotes and extended study leave. The man who checked his sources, cleaned up errors, and added citations for him was his son, Jacques, who was a good medievalist in his own right. The all-expenses-paid …

    Richard W Unger•CHAPTER•Shipping and economic growth,…•2011

While the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries saw dramatic changes in ship design the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries saw only incremental improvements. Advances in general came slowly because shipbuilders could work only on the basis of trial and error, and error had a very high cost. It is emphasized that there were changes in all three categories all of the time under each of the five regimes. One method is based on the performance o…

Jan Lucassen, Richard W Unger•CHAPTER•Shipping and economic growth,…•2011

According to this volume, European expansion to the New World and to Asia, was one of the most important events in modern economic history according to Karl Marx. The contributions in this volume to the discussion of productivity in shipping fall into two large categories. The first group examines specific places and periods, outlining the practices prevailing under certain regimes. The second group deals with the sources of productivity gains. T…

In sixteen essays authors explore the dramatic rise in the efficiency of European shipping in the three centuries before the Industrial Revolution. They offer reasons for the greater success of the sector than any other in making better use of labor. They describe the roots - political, organizational, technological, ecological, human - of rising productivity, treating those sources both theoretically and empirically. Comparisons with China show …

  • Epilogue

    Open Access•Richard W Unger•CHAPTER•Ships on Maps•2010

Ships virtually disappeared from maps in the eighteenth century. Some still appeared but rarely. At least those few were, as in previous years, always of the latest designs. 1 The reasons for the abandonment of ships as decoration are even harder to discern than those for the appearance of vessels in the Renaissance. There is certainly no single explanation for ships vanishing just as with their relatively sudden proliferation. Technically cartog…

  • Dutch Herring, Technology, and International Trade in the Seventeenth Century

    Open Access•Richard W Unger•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic History•1980•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 1

Herring exports to the Baltic from the Netherlands in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries were closely related to exports of the previous year rather than to aggregate levels of trade. Dutch domination of the European market for salted herring in the seventeenth century thus cannot be explained by some external factor but rather by the internal nature of the Dutch fishery: by technology, organization, and the institutions which administered …

    Richard W Unger•ARTICLE•Technology and Culture•1981

It is a commonplace in history of ship design that during 16th century Europeans developed two quite different vessel types, one for fighting and one for carrying goods. Each was so specialized that it was not advisable, and in many cases not feasible, to use them interchangeably. Once shipbuilders made distinction, two types were subject to separate development. As one work suggests, One type grew definitely into a mere carrier of merchandise, w…
