Developing and Implementing Initiatives to Enhance Psychoanalytic Education

Countertransferential and other types of personal responses to candidates are inevitable among psychoanalytic educators, whether they be supervisors, progression advisors, the progression committee as a whole, or course instructors. Approaches to fostering the educational value of candidate evaluation are presented, in view of the plethora of intra-psychic challenges that combine with many other complexities of learning to work as an analyst. Supervisory countertransferences and impingements in evaluating readiness for graduation
Utilizing detailed, in-depth material from supervisory hours from around the world (explored in End of Training Evaluation groups), this paper shows that supervisors are subject to multiple, diverse and, at times, ongoing intense countertransferences and impingements on their ability to evaluate candidates' progress. An educational initiative, Psychoanalytic Case Development Supervision, began as an ad hoc practical response when nearly half the candidates in a talented class lacked the psychoanalytic case required for progression. The author examines the interplay between neuropsychological dysfunction and psychological conflict. Two ideas are emphasized. First, clinicians may overlook or subtly de-emphasize the contribution of neuropsychological dysfunction to patients' difficulties. Adolescent males, fatherhood, and abortion
Abortion
Based primarily on responses of men accompanying their sexual partners to an abortion clinic, this exploratory study examines the decision to seek abortion in terms of the relationship of the couple. Findings suggest that, for those who come to the clinic as a couple, the abortion decision indicates neither a pathological relationship nor the likelihood of negative sequelae. Clinical implications and directions for further research are discussed
