Puerto Rican Families’ Experiences of Displacement in the Aftermath of Hurricane Maria and Their Receiving District's Enactment of Care
Background/Context In the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, Florida's Mockingbird Public Schools (MPS) received approximately 3,500 students from Puerto Rico. After Hurricane María, approximately 3,500 students enrolled in on Florida’s school district from Puerto Rico. This article seeks to explore how community-based institutions can serve as contexts for the development of critical literacy frameworks among youth. Using examples from research conducted by the authors in a Puerto Rican community, we elaborate ways that schools can serve as counter-storytelling institutions that encourage students to critically examine society
