  • Psychological Sequelae of the September 11 Terrorist Attacks in New York City

Sandro Galea, John Ahern et al.•ARTICLE•New England Journal of Medicine•2002

BACKGROUND: The scope of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, was unprecedented in the United States. We assessed the prevalence and correlates of acute post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression among residents of Manhattan five to eight weeks after the attacks. METHODS: We used random-digit dialing to contact a representative sample of adults living south of 110th Street in Manhattan. Participants were asked about demographic …

  • Television Images and Psychological Symptoms after the September 11 Terrorist Attacks

John Ahern, Jennifer Ahern et al.•ARTICLE•Psychiatry•2002

Exposure to graphic television images may exacerbate psychological symptoms in disaster situations. We tested the hypotheses that (1) more frequent viewing of television images of the September 11 terrorist attacks was associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression, and that (2) direct exposure to disaster events had an interactive effect with media viewing. We recruited 1,008 adult residents of the borough of Manhattan in Ne…

  • Operationalizing the Construct of Friendship among Children

    Open Access•Cynthia A Erdley, Douglas W Nangle et al.•ARTICLE•Social Development•1998•Citada por: 1

Peer relations researchers generally agree that friendship involves a close, mutual, dyadic relationship. However, the lack of consensus on how to operationalize this construct has limited our understanding of the role of friendship in social adjustment. The present study directly compared the psychometric properties (i.e., number of friendships identified, concordances, and stability) of the five major different definitions of friendship used in…

  • A Measure of Clustering in Free Recall Utilizing the Parameters of the Original Stimulus List

Joel A Gold, Nancy L Cowles•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1973

A measure of clustering in free recall based upon the parameters of the original stimulus list (R/Opt. R) was proposed and compared with five other measures for eight recall protocols. The R/Opt. R measure was shown to be relatively independent of the length of the recall protocol, but yielded higher scores where fewer categories were utilized. Optimum clustering was defined not simply in terms of perfect ordering of elements within the protocol …

  • Effects of Tuning Sets on Free Recall of Clustered and Unclustered Word Lists

Joel A Gold, Nancy L Cowles•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1973

The effects of three levels of cognitive tuning (transmission, reception, and no-set) on the free recall of clustered and unclustered word lists were investigated with the use of three ratio measures: proportion of words correctly recalled, number of runs of clusters out of the number of possible runs, and number of clusters utilized over the number of words recalled. Subjects included 99 female undergraduates enrolled in an introductory psycholo…
