The Impact of Uncapping of Mandatory Retirement on Postsecondary Institutions
The Federal Age Discrimination in Employment Act passed by Congress in 1986 eliminated mandatory age-related retirement at age 70. Initially, all postsecondary institutions were exempt from the Act. Based on a report by the National Research Council (NRC), which forecast only a minimal impact of this Act on higher education, the federal government allowed the exemption to lapse; effective December 31, 1993, faculty would no longer be subject to m…

Classroom-Based Surveys of Adolescent Risk-Taking Behaviors
Objectives. This investigation examined the effectiveness of intensive efforts to include frequently absent students in order to reduce bias in classroom-based studies. Methods. Grade 10 students in 13 New York City high schools (n = 2049) completed selfadministered confidential surveys in 4 different phases: a 1-day classroom capture, a 1-day follow-up, and 2 separate 1-week follow-ups. Interest in student affective and motivational perceptions about learning mathematics is growing. An instrument, the Mathematics Assessment Questionnaire, has been developed for use by classroom teachers to assess these perceptions. Care and Justice Moral Reasoning
In contrast to Kohlberg's (1969) universal model of moral development, Gilligan's (1982) model posits the existence of separate patterns of moral development for men and women. The pattern for men, termed the "justice ethic," is based on abstract concepts of justice, reciprocity, and individual rights. The Recovery of Structure in Linear and Ordinal Data
The ability of three-way INDSCAL and ALSCAL to recover true structure in proximity data is examined in a Monte Carlo study using data based on two-dimensional configurations. Extending earlier work in this area, data were simulated to vary on four factors: number of subjects (15 and 30), number of stimuli (12 and 20), amount of error (0.10 and 0.70), and type of monotonic transformation (linear, square, logarithmic, general cubic, and rank order)…

This paper is an attempt to clarify several recent issues that have been raised concerning the unreliability of difference scores. Articles by Overall and Woodward (1975, 1976) and Fleiss (1976) are considered. The conclusions of these articles are shown to be incomplete and to some extent misleading.
