Sustainability of Public Health Programs
Sustaining important public or grant-funded services after initial funding is terminated is a major public health challenge. We investigated whether tobacco treatment services previously funded within a statewide tobacco control initiative could be sustained after state funding was terminated abruptly. Challenges to Research in Urban Community Health Centers
Community health centers (CHCs) are important settings for research aimed at reducing health disparities. However, CHCs pose many challenges to research at patient, provider, and system levels. We summarized lessons learned from a multimethod, formative study to develop intervention strategies for improving colorectal cancer screening in CHCs, and make recommendations for future research. Tobacco Control Competencies for US Medical Students
The 2004 National Action Plan for Tobacco Cessation recommended that the US Department of Health and Human Services convene a diverse group of experts to ensure that competency in tobacco dependence interventions be a core graduation requirement for all new physicians and other key health care professionals. Core competencies would guide the design of new modules and explicitly outline the learning objectives for all graduating medical students. …
Physician Assistants as Providers of Surgically Induced Abortion Services
Objectives. We compared complication rates after surgical abortions performed by physician assistants with rates after abortions performed by physicians. Methods. A 2-year prospective cohort study of women undergoing surgically induced abortion was conducted. Ninety-one percent of eligible women (1363) were enrolled. Results. A Comparison of Data from Dental Charts, Client Interview, and Client Mail Survey
Dental records and client survey reports were compared as sources of data for dental research. Further, two forms of the client survey were completed, a mail survey and telephone interview. A random sample of 271 clients of a dental group practice based within a university health service was selected.
