Magnetometry of Corded Ware Culture Barrows in Western Ukraine
This study presents the results of a multiproxy geoarchaeological analysis of Corded Ware culture (CWC) barrows from the 3rd millennium bc in Volytsia, Western Ukraine. Combining magnetometry surveys, stratigraphic excavation, magnetic susceptibility testing and iron content analysis, the research aims to identify diagnostic features of CWC burial mounds and assess how soil processes affect their geophysical visibility. Magnetometry revealed that…
Experimental and Traceological Research on the Basis of the Archaeological Expedition of the Zaliztsi Museum of Local History
One of the important components of experimental and traceological research are the imitation experiments on the manufacture of replicas of ancient tools and their processing of various materials: wood, bone, leather etc. Since 2013 during the work of the archaeological expedition an experimental area was deployed on the basis of the Late Paleolithic settlement Anetivka 2. Subsequently, the experience was shared in the Zaliztsi Museum of local lor…
Barrow Necropolis from the 3rd and 2nd Millennia BC in Western Ukraine. A Bayesian Modeling and Isotopic Study
This article discusses the absolute chronology of burials from the 3rd and 2nd millennia BC discovered under the mounds of three barrows in the Kordyshiv cemetery in western Ukraine. Its aim is to create a chronological model of the burials by modeling 27 AMS 14 C dates obtained from 21 individuals buried in single and collective graves. Dietary analysis of stable carbon (δ 13 C) and nitrogen (δ 15 N) isotope values are presented. The Bayesian mo…
An Elite Bronze Age Double-Horse Burial from Western Ukraine and the Chariot Package Dissemination
The origin and dissemination of paired horse burials and the implications of adopting wheeled vehicle technology on Bronze Age European societies has not been extensively studied. To address this, we present the chronological, artifactual, DNA, contextual, and zooarchaeological analytical results from a Bronze Age double-horse burial in a barrow from Husiatyn, Podolia Upland, western Ukraine. The burial was radiocarbon dated to the 15th century b…
Archaeological sites of Mohylany group of Early Scythian time in Ternopil region
The article is shaped as a recounting of recently discovered archaeological sites belonging to the distinctive Mohylany group of Early Scythian time in the Ternopil region. It implements technical and scientific documentation of the Ternopil Center for Protection and Research of Cultural Heritage, available data from archival and museum collections, as well as scientific publications. Until the early 1970s, only two settlements with materials of …
Contentious issues of Palaeolithic of Chystopady (Podollian Upland)
The Ternopil Plateau is a large geomorphological region that occupies a significant part of the Podollian Upland. The issue of the occupation of this geographical area by Palaeolithic people remained little researched for a long time. Peculiarities of the relief and the geological structure of the territory indicated the prospectiveness of Palaeolithic finds in this part of the Podollian Upland. However, until recently, there was no information a…
The Absolute Chronology of Collective Burials From the 2nd Millennium Bc in East Central Europe
This article discusses the absolute chronology of collective burials of the Trzciniec Cultural Circle communities of the Middle Bronze Age in East Central Europe. Based on Bayesian modeling of 91 accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS 14 C) dates from 18 cemeteries, the practice of collective burying of individuals was linked to a period of 400–640 (95.4%) years, between 1830–1690 (95.4%) and 1320–1160 (95.4%) BC. Collective burials in mo…
