  • The discursive roots of the community

Open Access•Barry M Franklin, Barry Franklin•ARTICLE•Cadernos de História da Educação•2016

This article explores discourses constructed about the curriculum in the United States. The highlighted period goes from the 1890s to the first thirty years of the 20th century. Attention is given to the documents produced by the National Education Association (NEA) and the discursive formations outlined by three key individuals: Edward L. Thorndike, Ross L. Finney, and John Dewey. The main issue is about the curriculum as an effort to institute …

  • What type of global community and citizenship? Tangled discourses of neoliberalism and critical democracy in curriculum and its reform

    Steven P Camicia, Barry M Franklin•ARTICLE•Globalisation Societies and…•2011•Citada por: 13•Referencias: 10

Countries around the globe are responding to the pressures of globalisation, standardisation, accountability and market rationality. In curriculum reform, we theorise these pressures as neoliberal cosmopolitanism because they are intended to promote a new type of entrepreneurial citizen that navigates an increasingly interconnected global community. However, there is resistance to these pressures by educators who promote a global community based …

  • Community, Race, and Curriculum in Detroit

    Open Access•Barry M Franklin•CHAPTER•Curriculum, Community, and Urban…•2010

On the morning of Thursday, April 7, 1966, some 2,300 students at Detroit's all Black Northern High School responded to Superintendent Samuel Brownell's decision to close the school in anticipation of a student protest by walking out in mass and joining a group of parents who had congregated on the street in front of the school. For the next two hours, the students and parents marched around the school carrying picket signs that decried the educa…

  • Curriculum, Community, and Urban School Reform

    Barry M Franklin, B Franklin•BOOK•Curriculum, Community, and Urban…•2010

Barry M. Franklin's new work uses the concept of community as a lens for interpreting urban school reform since 1960. Focusing on the curriculum and employing case studies, he applies the concept to reform initiatives in a number of city school systems. Included are compensatory education, community control, mayoral takeovers, educational partnerships, and smaller learning communities. This comprehensive work concludes with a consideration of how…

  • National service and the ideal of community

Jose R Rosario, José Rosario et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Education Policy•1994•Referencias: 1

When faced with any of a number of societal problems, 20th‐century American intellectuals and public officials have found a ready answer in the ideal of community. Whatever the difficulty, these thinkers argue, the solution hinges on restoring a sense of community to American society. In this essay, the most recent example of this inclination in the report of the Commission on National and Community Service, What You Can Do for Your Country, is e…

Lawrence J. Dennis s intellectual biography of John L. Childs, a leading figure in twentieth-century American educational philosophy between 1930 and 1960, traces Childs s influence not only on education but also on midcentury politics, economics, and social issues. Jose R Rosario, José Rosario et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Education Policy•1992•Referencias: 9

When mid‐19th‐century educational reformers described the system of common schools which they envisioned for the USA, they talked about an institution that would be accessible to all children and that would provide them with a shared educational experience. As these early proponents of public schooling saw it, a system of universal schooling that educated all children had particular virtues for the new republic. It would ensure that all segments …

  • ‘Something old, something new, something borrowed…’

    Barry M Franklin•ARTICLE•Journal of Education Policy•1990

This essay offers a historical commentary on Turning Points: Preparing Youth for the 21st Century, the 1989 report on middle school education by the Carnegie Council's Task Force on Education of Young Adolescents, The report's opposition to tracking and its advocacy of teacher empowerment, initiatives that have been popular with school reformers of the 1980s, does distinguish Turning Points from earlier proposals for educational change. Most of t…

One of the most popular themes for the grist of curriculum theorists for the last ten to fifteen years has been the place of the movement in curriculum thought and practice. My own reading of the journals during this period leads me to believe that a significant portion of our recent curriculum discourse has been a commentary, typically critical, about the supposed role that ideas have played in that thought and practice. A number of contemporary…
