  • The glacial geomorphology of the Cordillera Darwin Icefield, Tierra del Fuego, southernmost South America

Open Access•Esti Izagirre, Neil F Glasser et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2024

The Cordillera Darwin Icefield (CDI) has experienced widespread retreat since the Little Ice Age (LIA, ∼1870 AD). Prior to this, information on outlet glacier dynamics is limited as there are few terrestrial observations and little mapped deglacial evidence, limiting our understanding of CDI dynamics on Holocene centennial to millennial timescales. Here we present a glacial geomorphological map of terrestrial landforms and features for the CDI an…

  • Geomorphology of Ulu Peninsula, James Ross Island, Antarctica

    Open Access•Stephen J A Jennings, Bethan J Davies et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2021

This study presents a 1:25,000 geomorphological map of the northern sector of Ulu Peninsula, James Ross Island, Antarctic Peninsula. The map covers an area of c. 250 km 2 , and documents the landforms and surficial sediments of one of the largest ice-free areas in Antarctica, based on remote sensing and field-based mapping. The large-scale landscape features are determined by the underlying Cretaceous sedimentary and Neogene volcanic geology, whi…

  • The glacial geomorphology of western Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica

    Open Access•Jennifer C H Newall, Taisiya Dymova et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2020

Reconstructing the response of present-day ice sheets to past global climate change is important for constraining and refining the numerical models which forecast future contributions of these ice sheets to sea-level change. Mapping landforms is an essential step in reconstructing glacial histories. Here we present a new map of glacial landforms and deposits on nunataks in western Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. Nunataks are mountains or ridges t…

  • Changes in glacier surface cover on Baltoro glacier, Karakoram, north Pakistan, 2001–2012

    Open Access•M J Gibson, Neil F Glasser et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2017

The presence of supraglacial debris on glaciers in the Himalaya-Karakoram affects the ablation rate of these glaciers and their response to climatic change. To understand how supraglacial debris distribution and associated surface features vary spatially and temporally, geomorphological mapping was undertaken on Baltoro Glacier, Karakoram, for three time-separated images between 2001–2012. Debris is supplied to the glacier system through frequent…

  • Rapid thinning of the Welsh Ice Cap at 20–19 ka Based on 10 Be Ages

    Open Access•Philip D Hughes, Neil F Glasser et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2016

New 10 Be ages from the summits of three mountain areas of North Wales reveal a very similar exposure timing as the Welsh Ice Cap thinned after the global Last Glacial Maximum. Eight bedrock and one boulder sample gave a combined arithmetic mean exposure age of 19.08 ± 0.80 ka (4.2%, 1σ). Similar exposure ages over a 320 m vertical range (824 to 581 m altitude) show that ice cap thinning was very rapid and spatially uniform. Using the same produc…

  • Structural glaciology of Austre Brøggerbreen, northwest Svalbard

    Open Access•Stephen J A Jennings, Michael J Hambrey et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2016

Structural glaciological maps can be used to study the structural evolution and past dynamics of glaciers. The map described here documents the glacier-wide structural characteristics of Austre Brøggerbreen, a c. 12 km2 predominantly cold-based valley glacier in northwest Svalbard. The structural map reveals that the glacier is dominated by deep-penetrating fractures that are now relict (crevasse traces). These structures indicate that, despite b…

  • Glaciological and geomorphological map of Glacier Noir and Glacier Blanc, French Alps

Open Access•Pierre Lardeux, Neil F Glasser et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2016

This paper presents and describes a glaciological and geomorphological map of Glacier Noir and Glacier Blanc, French Alps. Glacier Noir is a debris-covered glacier and is adjacent to Glacier Blanc, a clean-ice (debris-free) glacier. The glaciological and geomorphological evolution of Glacier Blanc is well known, but the evolution of Glacier Noir is poorly understood, as is the case for many debris-covered glaciers globally, despite their importan…

  • The structural glaciology of southwest Antarctic Peninsula Ice Shelves (ca. 2010)

Open Access•Tom Holt, Neil F Glasser et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2013

The Antarctic Peninsula has recently seen a rapid breakup of its peripheral ice shelves, attributed to atmospheric and oceanic warming in the region. Previous work has illustrated that the final breakup mechanisms are often controlled by the structural glaciology of the ice shelf, and thus understanding the structure of the remaining ‘stable’ ice shelves is of fundamental importance to assess their future response to continued environmental chang…

  • Little Ice Age glaciers in Britain

    Open Access•Stephan Harrison, Ann V Rowan et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2013•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 7

It is widely believed that the last glaciers in the British Isles disappeared at the end of the Younger Dryas stadial (12.9–11.7 cal. kyr BP). Here, we use a glacier–climate model driven by data from local weather stations to show for the first time that glaciers developed during the Little Ice Age (LIA) in the Cairngorm Mountains. Our model is forced from contemporary conditions by a realistic difference in mean annual air temperature of −1.5°C …

    Open Access•Neil F Glasser, Krister N Jansson et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2011

At several times during the Quaternary, a major eastward-flowing outlet glacier of the former Patagonian Ice Sheet occupied the Lago San Martin Valley in Argentina (49°S, 72°W). We present a glacial chronology for the valley based on geomorphological mapping and cosmogenic nuclide ( 10 Be) exposure ages ( n = 10) of boulders on moraines and lake shorelines. There are five prominent moraine belts in the Lago San Martin Valley, associated with exte…

  • Glaciar León, Chilean Patagonia

    Open Access•Stephan Harrison, Neil F Glasser et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2008•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 7

Glaciar León is a temperate, grounded outlet of the eastern North Patagonian Icefield (NPI). It terminates at an active calving margin in Lago Leones, a 10 km long proglacial lake. We take a multidisciplinary approach to its description and use ASTER imagery and clast sedimentology to describe the geomorphology of the glacier and its associated moraines. We date periods of glacier retreat over the last 2500 years using a combination of lichenomet…

Geomorphological mapping, sedimentology, lichenometry and dendrochronology were used to assess the nature and timing of glacier recession, moraine development and catastrophic mass movements in a tributary of the Leones valley, east of the Hielo Patagónico Norte, Chile. We show that during the 'Little Ice Age' Glaciar Calafate advanced downvalley to produce a terminal moraine. Recession of the glacier from this position occurred in the 1 870s and…

  • Fast-flowing outlet glaciers of the Last Glacial Maximum Patagonian Icefield

    Open Access•Neil F Glasser, Krister N Jansson•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2005

Glacial geomorphology around the Northern Patagonian Icefield indicates that a number of fast-flowing outlet glaciers (the continuation of ice streams further upglacier) drained the icefield during the Last Glacial Maximum. These topographically controlled fast-flowing glaciers may have dictated the overall pattern of Last Glacial Maximum ice discharge, lowered the ice-surface profile, and forced the ice-divide westward. The influence of the fast…

  • An advance of Soler Glacier, North Patagonian Icefield, at c. AD 1222–1342

    Open Access•Neil F Glasser, Michael J Hambrey et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2002•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 4

Soler Glacier is a temperate outlet glacier on the eastern side of the North Patagonian Icefield in Chile. The glacier is currently receding from its ‘Little Ice Age’ maximum position, attained sometime between ad 1600 and 1900. Across the snout and forefield of the glacier is an arcuate belt of well-sorted granule gravel and coarse sand containing tree remains. These sediments are interpreted as reworked glaciolacustrine material, elevated to th…
