Inuit knowledge and use of wood resources on the west coast of Nunavik, Canada
Driftwood and shrubs are the primary wood resources available in most areas of coastal Nunavik. Today, they are mainly used as fuel for campfires, but historically they were very important for the ancestors of present-day Inuit. This article documents Inuit traditional knowledge about the origin, availability, gathering, and exploitation of wood resources in this region located in the Low Arctic and the Subarctic. Interviews were conducted with 2…

Particle size distribution of lithic assemblages and taphonomy of Palaeolithic sites
The geoarchaeology and traditional knowledge of winter sod houses in eastern Hudson Bay, Canadian Low Arctic
A multidisciplinary study was undertaken at the Qijurittuq Site (IbGk‐3) on Drayton Island in Low‐Arctic Quebec (Canada) to document the relationships between climatic, environmental, and cultural changes and the choice of Thule/Inuit dwelling style in the eastern Arctic. Several marine terraces were 14 C‐dated with shells in order to reconstruct the area's uplift (glacioisostatic rebound) curve. Plant macrofossil analysis of peat was conducted t…
The Qijurittuq site (IbGk-3), Eastern Hudson Bay
Geografisk Tidsskrift—Danish Journal of Geography 110(2):227–243, 2010 An interdisciplinary study was conducted at Qijurittuq (IbGk-3), an archaeological site located on Drayton Island along the eastern shore of Hudson Bay, Nunavik. Local Inuit made important contributions to the research. High school students participated in the field school, and elders shared their traditional knowledge. The elders expressed an interest in the source of the woo…
Paleoeskimo site taphonomy
A detailed taphonomic study was undertaken at the Tayara site in order to determine the impact of natural processes such as surface water flow on spatial patterning and site formation. The study focused on Paleoeskimo level II, which contains many lithics and significant faunal remains. Level II integrity was assessed through spatial analysis and by examining the size distribution of lithic artifacts and bone orientation. Experimental knapping ai…

Palaeoeskimo Lithic Technology
The concept of the chaîne opératoire is a practical one when considering complex lithic technology. The concept was conceived through the development of the anthropology of techniques and the psychological sciences. For more than five years; Palaeoeskimo lithic technology in Nunavik (Eastern Arctic) was examined following this concept, which integrated the entire artifact story from raw material procurement to final discard of tools, offering man…
