The Somerset Dendrochronology Project
The Project was undertaken by the Somerset Vernacular Building Research Group between 1996 and 1999. This summary follows the descriptions of Phases 1 and 2 in VA 29, p.22 (John T. Medieval Somerset Roofs
A review of the medieval and post-medieval types of roof construction in Somerset occasioned by recent dendrochronological investigations carried out by the Somerset Vernacular Building Research Group in 1996-98. Although not all examples discussed have been dated, the successful tree-ring dating of 22 roofs helps to confirm a chronological order for the different designs of roof discussed. Four Somerset Aisled Trusses
Aisled halls and their derivatives occur only rarely in Somerset. This article illustrates and compares four aisled trusses forming the low-end partition walls of four late-medieval halls. Their structure suggests a chronological sequence. The possibility is discussed that the two later examples may have been designed chiefly for display
The George Inn, Norton St Philip, Somerset
A survey of the George Inn, with some references to the medieval cloth and wool trade, and an interpretation of the architectural evidence to show the various stages of building, the existing structure being of the late fourteenth century overlaid with many subsequent alterations.
