A review of the medieval and post-medieval types of roof construction in Somerset occasioned by recent dendrochronological investigations carried out by the Somerset Vernacular Building Research Group in 1996-98. Although not all examples discussed have been dated, the successful tree-ring dating of 22 roofs helps to confirm a chronological order for the different designs of roof discussed. The majority of the roofs shown here were surveyed by SVBRG, always with reference to the research and illustration of the many early roofs recorded by E. H. D. Williams, R. G. Gilson and others
