Decadent Orientalisms
This book explores the confluence of decadence and Orientalism since the mid-nineteenth century in French and Arabic writing. It demonstrates how French Orientalism set the terms of modernity for Arab and Muslim thinkers and writers, but also how the latter responded to and transformed these terms. The book argues that Orientalism is doubly decadent: it describes the supposedly inherent degeneration of the Semitic and the “Oriental,” and in so do…
Tagging the spectral mobility of the stateless body
Following recent work by Eleanor Kaufman, this essay reads Deleuze as a thinker of stasis and immobilization in order to think through the fantasy of the refugee as an exemplary figure of mobility. Working through Difference and Repetition, I argue that Deleuze’s understanding of space emerges from a concern with both immobility and the singular concept of temporality articulated in his concept of the “third synthesis of time.” The essay then tur…
Cinematic checkpoints and sovereign time
This article articulates a concept of sovereign time and aims to demonstrate how the checkpoint generates this time. After briefly discussing how the checkpoint system in the West Bank radically alters the tempos of daily life, It then works through the understanding of messianic time developed by Walter Benjamin and Giorgio Agamben in order to distinguish sovereign time as a unique concept. After an intensive three days exploring, with the other contributors to the issue, literatures and cultures of the checkpoint in global context, our suspicions as to its vast critical potential were confirmed. Examining the work of Ernest Renan in relation to thinkers confessing Arab and Islamic affiliations in the Ottoman fin de siècle allows us to understand how Orientalist scholarship has used decadence as the figure through which its positivist scientific claims were redistributed as performative speech acts.
