Using the Community Perception Tracker (CPT) to inform Covid-19 response in Lebanon and Zimbabwe
The CPT appears to be a promising approach for ensuring that community engagement is undertaken systematically and that community perspectives are actively incorporated to improve programming. While crisis-affected populations generally found the programmes to be useful and relevant and to have influenced their knowledge and behaviours, it is not possible to attribute this to the CPT approach due to the study design
The determinants of handwashing in humanitarian crisis setting during the Covid-19 pandemic
The Wash’Em process was developed to improve the design of handwashing behaviour change programmes during outbreaks and humanitarian crises. It aims to rapidly create evidence-based, contextualized handwashing programmes. Wash’Em was widely used during the COVID-19 pandemic. This multi-country secondary data analysis compares data emerging from Wash’Em during the pandemic, to understand whether commonalities in programming constraints or the dete…
Using Wash’Em to Design Handwashing Programmes for Crisis-Affected Populations in Zimbabwe
Wash'Em is a process that supports humanitarians in assessing and designing rapid but context-specific hygiene programmes in crises or outbreaks. The process consists of training implementers, using tools to learn from populations, and entering findings into a software which generates contextualised activities. A process evaluation of Wash'Em use was conducted in a drought-affected area in Midland province, Zimbabwe. Data were collected during th…
How are hygiene programmes designed in crises? Qualitative interviews with humanitarians in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Iraq
Hygiene programming in crises-affected settings could be strengthened by initiatives targeted at supporting humanitarian staff during the pre-implementation programme design phase. This may include rapid assessment tools to better understand behavioural determinants in crisis-affected contexts; the use of a theory of change to inform the selection of programme activities; and funding mechanisms which encourage equitable partnerships, phased progr…
Facilitating hand hygiene in displacement camps during the Covid-19 pandemic
Background Handwashing with soap is critical for the prevention of diarrhoeal diseases and outbreak related diseases, including interrupting the transmission of COVID-19. People living in large displacement settings are particularly vulnerable to such outbreaks, however, practicing handwashing is typically challenging in these contexts. Methods We conducted a qualitative assessment of the implementation of a combined intervention to facilitate ha…
The Edinburgh Companion to Irish Modernism
Redefines Irish modernism as resistance to religious, sociopolitical and aesthetic orthodoxies Investigates connections between literary modernism and other cultural forms such as journalism and literature in Irish; design, cinema, and stained glass; sexual mores and food etiquette; maps, waterways, and postage stamps Enriches the canon of Irish modernism by recovering lesser-known works by both neglected and canonical writers, especially women p…
Edinburgh Companion to Irish Modernism
Redefines Irish modernism as resistance to religious, sociopolitical and aesthetic orthodoxies Edinburgh Companion to Irish Modernism presents a fresh perspective on received understandings of Irish modernism. The introduction draws connections between modernism in the arts and modernism as a resistant, liberal, relativist movement within the Catholic Church that was gathering momentum in the same period. In religion as in culture, resistance to …
An exploratory pilot study of the effect of modified hygiene kits on handwashing with soap among internally displaced persons in Ethiopia
The trial was registered at www.ClinicalTrials.gov 6 September 2019 (reg no: NCT04078633 )
A “Hair-Trigger Society” and the Woman Who Felt Something in Anna Burns's Milkman
This article responds to debates about the “big, ambitious novel” and “hysterical realism” by challenging several prevailing scholarly orthodoxies about large-scale fiction: that whole world-building precludes the rendering of a single, feeling human; that mimesis and “hysterical” traits, like absurdity, are mutually exclusive; or that a whole-world view requires third-person narrative omniscience. The analysis centers on Anna Burns's Milkman (20…
The Edinburgh Companion to Irish Modernism
The Edinburgh Companion to Irish Modernism showcases cutting-edge developments in Irish and modernist studies. Extending the timeline of modernism, the Companion reaches back to the Irish Literary Revival of the late nineteenth century and forward to recent innovations in the arts. The Companion also calls for a more inclusive understanding of Irish modernism, drawing greater attention, for example, to the pioneering work of women and prompting a…
How to set up government-led national hygiene communication campaigns to combat Covid-19
While large-scale changes in population behaviour are required to reduce the transmission of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 virus, the emergency context is not conducive to the sort of careful communications planning that would normally be required to meet such a task. Rapid strategic communications planning in a pandemic by governments is, however, possible and necessary. Steps include setting up a dedicated communications t…
Hygiene programming during outbreaks
The experiences of humanitarians allowed us to identify areas that could be strengthened when designing hygiene programmes in future outbreaks. Specifically, we identified a need for rapid research methods to explore behavioural determinants; increased skills training for frontline staff, and increased operational research to explore behaviour change strategies that are suited to outbreak situations
An Aesthetics of Unintimacy
An Aesthetics of Unintimacy:Narrative Complexity in Elizabeth Bowen’s Fictional Style Siân White (bio) In an apparently ordinary passage of narration, part way through Elizabeth Bowen’s The Last September (1929), the narrator remarks of the protagonist, Lois, while behind the reins of the horse-driven trap with her deceased mother’s ex-lover, Hugo: “They might have said, she felt now, anything; but what had remained unsaid, never conceived in tho…
