We must do better
Sociologists have contributed greatly to our understanding of how systems of oppression operate and work together to produce injustice. However, they have paid considerably less theoretical and empirical attention to fatphobia and ableism compared to some other systems of oppression. Worse yet, noncritical sociological research on fat bodies and disabled bodyminds has often contributed to the perpetuation of both. In this critical literature revi…
Elevating the Voices and Research of Fat Scholars and Activists
Unfortunately, when it comes to much of the research on fat people, the voices of fat people, including fat researchers and activists, are either marginalized or absent. We believe one way to address this shortcoming in the literature is through greater use of standpoint theory, particularly the application of standpoint approaches that emphasize the importance of situated-knowledge and the epistemic advantage of marginalized groups. In this intr…
Fat Is a Social Justice Issue, Too
Empirical evidence continues to show that like other historically marginalized groups, fat people experience discrimination in employment, education, the media, politics, interpersonal relationships, and especially health care. Yet, despite the fact that fatphobia in the United States has always been intimately connected to other systems of oppression like sexism, racism, and classism, those of us who identify as critical sociologists so often ex…
Gender-Blind Sexism and Rape Myth Acceptance
The purpose of this article is to explore whether gender-blind sexism, as an extension of Bonilla-Silva's racialized social system theory, is an appropriate theoretical framework for understanding the creation and continued prevalence of rape myth acceptance. Specifically, we hypothesize that individuals who hold attitudes consistent with the frames of gender-blind sexism are more likely to accept common rape myths. Data for this article come fro…
Beyond the Black–White Test Score Gap
Data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Survey–Birth Cohort are used to analyze the factors that lead to the reading readiness of children who participate in nonparental care the year prior to kindergarten (N = 4,550), with a specific focus on Latino children (N = 800). Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis demonstrates that reading scores are significantly influenced by the type of care provided the year prior to kindergarten, the care…
Constructing the color-blind classroom
The purpose of this study is to explore teachers' attitudes towards race and schooling, and the ways in which they 'do' race in contemporary 'color-blind' learning environments where social location is not believed to exert any meaningful influence on students' potential for success. Data for this study were gathered through observations and in-depth interviews of teachers in a primarily white elementary school, a primarily Hispanic elementary sc…
