Doing gender in the playground
Drawing on video data collected by newly arrived migrant children in a Finnish primary school, this article explores how children’s practices of gender are enmeshed in site-specific arrangements that enable or constrain their access to certain places and activities at the school playground. Combining feminist theories with theories of practice, we show how children’s participation in play is shaped by a combination of intersecting social categori…
What makes bullying complicated - teachers’ perceptions of bullying-related issues in school
This paper examines what makes bullying challenging for teachers. We draw on scholarship that conceptualises bullying as a socially, culturally, and institutionally produced phenomenon, shaped by group dynamics, structural inequalities, and the material-discursive conditions of school life. We utilise the concepts of narrative resources and storylines, looking into the storylines in which student teachers take themselves to be in, and in the positions that are opened for pupils in these storyline…
How to be a ‘Good Asylum Seeker’? The Subjectification of Young Men Seeking Asylum
This research focuses on the subjectification of young asylum-seeking men. By subjectification, we mean the effort an individual invests in detecting, negotiating, meeting and contesting the surrounding discursive expectations. The underlying question is: if someone wants to fulfil the position ascribed to them, that is be a ‘good asylum seeker’ and respond to the surrounding demands as much as possible, what would then, in fact, be a ‘good asylu…
Confined in Waiting
This research considers the waiting and confinement experienced by young asylum seekers during and after their stay at a temporary shelter in Finland. The data for this research consists of interviews and ethnographic ‘hanging out’ with nine young asylum seekers throughout their asylum process. In order to generate new knowledge about the situated and fluid experiences of young adult asylum seekers’ confinement, this article focuses on four in-de…
