    일본은 1910년 한국을 강제 병탄함으로써 한반도를 식민지로 삼았다. 이후 중국대륙으로 망명한 한인들은 매년 8월 29일을 ‘경술국치일’이라 부르며 이날을 슬픔과 분발을 다짐하는 계기로 삼았다. 중국 관내지역 및 동북지역에 형성된 한인사회에서는 매년 8월 29일을 맞이하여 국권상실이라는 치욕의 과거를 성찰하고 항일독립 의지를 굳건히 하기 위한 기념활동을 전개하였다. 기념활동은 기념식·연설회 등의 형태로 다양하게 진행되었으며, 민족의식 환기, 단결과 격려의 시간이 되었다. 더욱이 3·1 운동이 발생하기 전 국치일은 망국민으로 전락한 한민족의 유일한 기념일이었다. 즉, 당시의 국치기념활동은 제 나라를 잃고 남의 나라 땅에서 독립과 광복의 날을 이끌어내야 하는 한인으로서의 정체성 확인과 단결의 매개체 역할을 한 독립운동의 중요 일환이었다
