This paper analyses the linguistic resources used by speakers to profile the participants in taboo actions, focusing on expressions for the concept abortar 'to abort' in Spanish sociolinguistic interviews. In this article, we show how the hashtag#jesuisCharlie, created following the attack onCharlie Hebdo, gave rise to the use of many other hashtags starting with#jesuis, across languages. In this paper, we defend the study of semantic variation from a cognitive sociolinguistics perspective. Through a case study on the semantic variation of ‘abortion’ in Spanish newspapers' comments, we investigate quantitatively the influence of the independent factors (‘source’, ‘date’, ‘ideology’, ‘gender’, ‘quote’) on conceptual onomasiological variation.
