  • Surnames in south-eastern France

Open Access•Celia Kamel, Bérengère Saliba-Serre et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2023

An analysis of the distribution of surnames through time and space allows us to understand the structure of human groups, their exchanges or even their possible isolation. The French population has already been studied through surnames and it has been shown that the Sud-Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region differed from the rest of France in both the 20th and 21st centuries (Mourrieras et al. , 1995; Scapoli et al. , 2005). The objective of this stu…

  • Analysis of skeletal remains from the Battle of Britain

    Open Access•Emeline Verna, Jean‐marc Femolant et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022•Referencias: 24

During World War II, part of France was occupied by the German army. In the summer of 1940, the Germans wanted to invade England from France. Then, the Battle of Britain began, which lasted until spring 1941 after a victory of the Royal Air Force over the Luftwaffe. During this battle, the Luftwaffe bombed southeast England and the London area using the Beauvais-Tillé airfield (northern France). This airfield was mainly used by German bomber squa…

  • An outbreak of relapsing fever unmasked by microbial paleoserology, 16th century, France

Open Access•Hamadou Oumarou Hama, Rémi Barbieri et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2020•Referencias: 20

OBJECTIVES: Depicting past epidemics currently relies on DNA-based detection of pathogens, an approach limited to pathogens with well-preserved DNA sequences. We used paleoserology as a complementary approach detecting specific antibodies under a mini line-blot format including positive and negative control antigens. METHODS: Mini line blot assay incorporated skim milk as negative control, Staphylococcus aureus as positive control, and antigens p…

OBJECTIVES: The evaluation of developmental stability (DS) by measuring fluctuating asymmetry (FA), a bioindicator of general cumulative stress, is an approach that has often been used to characterize health status in past populations. New techniques of geometric morphometrics now enable a better appreciation of FA than before, with a more refined quantification of variation. The aim of our study is to determine the effectiveness of geometric mor…

A rapid diagnostic test (RDT) that detects Yersinia pestis F1 antigen was applied to 28 putative plague victims exhumed from seven burial sites in southeastern France dating to the 16th–18th centuries. Yersinia pestis F1 antigen was detected in 19 of the 28 (67.9%) samples. The 27 samples used as negative controls yielded negative results. Soil samples taken from archeological sites related to both positive and negative samples tested negative fo…

  • Age and sex bias in the reconstruction of past population structures

    Open Access•Silvia M Bello, Aminte Thomann et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2006•Citada por: 41•Referencias: 18

Palaeodemographical studies are founded on the assumption that the sex and age distribution of the skeletal sample reflects the constitution of the original population. It is becoming increasingly clear, however, that the type and amount of information that may be derived from osteoarchaeological collections are related to the state of preservation of remains. This work proposes a new method to evaluate bone preservation, to identify age and sex …

A mass grave of the soldiers of Napoleon's Great Army, containing no less than 3269 individuals who died during the retreat from Russia in December 1812, was uncovered during an archaeological rescue excavation in 2002 in Vilnius, Lithuania. General dental analysis, including that of dental wear, tooth loss, caries, calculus, and periodontal diseases and abscesses, was used to evaluate the oral health status and possible dietary patterns of indiv…

  • Two neolithic cases of Hyperostosis frontalis interna

    Open Access•William Devriendt, M D Piercecchi‐marti et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2004•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 7

Bone nodules resulting from Hyperostosis frontalis interna (HFI) were observed on the endocranial surface of the frontal bone of two elderly females in excess of 50 years of age coming from the excavation of the Neolithic hypogeum of Boileau (Vaucluse, France). These observations constituted the first evidence for HFI in the Neolithic periods in Europe. Copyright (c) 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

  • Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases in the Past

    O Dutour, Yann Ardagna et al.•CHAPTER•Emerging Pathogens•2003

Paleoepidemiology is a recent approach to the study of diseases in the past. This requires well documented osteoarcheological series in order to minimize the numerous systematic biases represented by sample size, the material’s state of preservation, the ‘demographic’ structure of the sample, and its chronological coherence. Very few skeletal series are compatible with this set of conditions. The plague epidemics in Europe have accounted for a mi…

This article sheds an entirely new light on the study of the plague thanks to contributions from disciplines that are only seldom brought together around the same research topic: anthropology, archaeology, historical demography, history, microbiology and paleodemography. It confronts two types of documents: biological archives (the skeletons) and historical archives, the comparative study of which has provided new and original information.Distrib…

Bone remains in osteological collections are not a reflection of a living population, only a sample of the original population. Differential states of preservation related to the individuals’ age can result in under-representation of certain categories (especially very young children). Such under-representation produces a bias in the reconstruction of past populations. The present anthropological study was carried out on 341 skeletons from three m…

Sex estimation is one of the most frequently encountered issues in forensic medicine. While in the case of adults this determination is essentially based on iliac bones and provides a rather reliable classification, there are fewer studies conducted on fetuses and the results are often contradictory. Therefore, we examinated 83 pairs of fetal iliac bones in the Hungarian collection of Fazekas and Kosa and searched for metric criteria that can the …
