Toward Community Empowerment
People who inject drugs (PWID) who migrate from Puerto Rico (PR) to New York City (NYC) are at elevated risk for hepatitis C (HCV), HIV and drug overdose. There is an urgent need to identify a sustainable path toward improving the health outcomes of this population. Peer-driven HIV/HCV prevention interventions for PWID are effective in reducing risk behaviors. Additionally, the concept of intravention—naturally occurring disease prevention activi…

Addressing the HIV/Aids Epidemic Among Puerto Rican People Who Inject Drugs
High levels of HIV risk behaviors and prevalence have been reported among Puerto Rican people who inject drugs (PRPWID) since early in the HIV epidemic. Advances in HIV prevention and treatment have reduced HIV among people who inject drugs (PWID) in the United States. We examined HIV-related data for PRPWID in Puerto Rico and the US Northeast to assess whether disparities continue. Injection drug use as a risk for HIV is still overrepresented am…
HIV and Aging
HIV risk behaviors, susceptibility to HIV acquisition, progression of disease after infection, and response to antiretroviral therapy all vary by age. In those living with HIV, current effective treatment has increased the median life expectancy to >70 years of age. Biologic, medical, individual, social, and societal issues change as one ages with HIV infection, but there has been only a small amount of research in this field. Therefore, the Offi…
Differential gender effects of depression on use of HIV medications among HIV-positive Puerto Rican drug users
Many barriers to the use of HIV medications have been identified. Research findings have also shown a gender disparity in HIV care behaviors. However, interaction effects of gender with the potential barriers to use of HIV medications among HIV-positive minority drug users remain under-studied. This study examined interaction effects of gender with potential moderating factors (i.e., individual and network characteristics) on the use of HIV medic…

Gender differences in health status and care among HIV-infected minority drug users
Gender differences were examined in health status and HIV care among HIV-infected minority drug users. More women than men reported having HIV-related symptoms and other health conditions, such as asthma and allergies. Hepatitis B or C was more often reported by men. As compared to men, women delayed HIV care and fewer attended HIV support groups. Delayed entry into HIV treatment was also significantly related to being Hispanic and being diagnose…

Predicting Treatment Retention with a Brief “Opinions About Methadone” Scale
It is important to identify social conditions, program factors, and client characteristics that predict retention because time in substance abuse treatment is associated with improved health, mood, and social functioning. Treatment dropouts also are at high risk for serious harms, including relapse. Most opioid-dependent persons require long-term stabilization in methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) to normalize brain function and control withdr…

Understanding HIV risks of chronic drug-using men who have sex with men
Focus groups and individual structured interviews were conducted in six cities with 98 predominantly street-recruited men who had a recent history of smoking crack or injecting drugs and who reported having had sex with other men (MSM) in the past year. Twenty-six focus groups explored the cultural and social context of participant's drug use and sexual activity and addressed outreach and HIV prevention issues pertinent to this population. Narrat…
Access to Sterile Syringes by Injection Drug Users in Puerto Rico
A variety of studies have concluded that a primary reason injection drug users (IDUs), their sexual partners, and children continue to be infected with HIV is the lack of access to sterile syringes. The present study employed ethnographic interviews and observations to examine access to sterile syringes by IDUs in Puerto Rico between July 1995 and June 1997, a time characterized by the absence of legal restrictions on the sale and possession of s…
HIV infection and patterns of risk among women drug injectors and crack users in low and high sero-prevalence sites
As AIDS cases among US women continue to increase, a better understanding of women's behavioural risk patterns is needed to inform intervention efforts. Data were from 2,945 women drug injectors and crack users. Statistical analyses compared sociodemographic variables, lifetime behavioural risk patterns, HIV sero-prevalence and history of sexually transmitted diseases, and determined predictors of HIV infection separately in 16 low and four high …
Syringe Acquisition and Use of Syringe Exchange Programs by Puerto Rican Drug Injectors in New York and Puerto Rico
Cessation of Drug Use
Many studies have found that the longer a drug user remains in treatment, the more positive the outcome. The majority of studies on the effects of time in treatment have followed subjects from the time they enter treatment. The subjects of the present study are injection drug users and crack users who were out of treatment at the time of their recruitment to the study. Between the initial and six-month follow-up interviews, some chose to enroll i…
Cultural Factors Influencing HIV Risk Behavior Among Dominicans in New York City
Hispanics in the United States have disproportionately high rates of HIV. The existence of ethnically and culturally diverse Hispanic communities indicate that qualitative research on HIV-related attitudes and behaviors within subgroups is needed to develop successful interventions. Findings from interviews with 20 Dominicans involved with drug-related or sex work-related activities in New York City are presented in terms of predominant cultural …
