This bibliographical paper illustrates a number of the major themes in William E. Gordon's writings on social work and research from the 1950's to the present time by selecting quotations from his work and embedding them in an interpretive matrix of his ideas. These themes include the role of research in social work knowledge-building, the distinction between knowledge and values, the critique of the Working Definition of Social Work, and efforts on the classification of social work practice
