The aim of this article is to assess the nature and likely future development of the Soviet market for raw cocoa. This may seem an unduly esoteric and unpromising exercise, but I believe the results have considerable general interest. Cocoa is one of a number of tropical primary products for which Soviet and East European demand has come to be of substantial importance from the points of view both of producer countries and of other buyers on the world market. Primary products account for a very large part of total Soviet imports from underdeveloped countries, and are the major means of repayment of Soviet aid. Yet we know comparatively little about this important part of Soviet trade
