Despite often being reduced to a peripheral role in wider scholarly and journalistic stories of global Islam, Nigeria has long been at the center of many of Islam’s most important international developments. From early ties built around long-distance trade and the emergence of a Sahelian Islamicate world to regional powers like Bornu and the Sokoto Caliphate and the crucial development of colonial indirect rule systems incorporating Muslim leadership, the region has been at the forefront of wider global changes that shape the faith. Today, Nigeria’s place in the global umma is driven by the connections forged in the independence era and shaped by Muslims’ newfound mobility for business, education, and in recent years, violent extremism.
