This article explores the relationship between kinship terminologies and the management of personal relations, focusing on the "axiom of amity." Kemp argues that kin terms, while seemingly fixed categories, are actively manipulated by individuals to negotiate social interactions and achieve desired outcomes. He examines how the inherent ambiguity in kin classifications allows for flexibility in defining relationships, enabling individuals to invoke amity or distance as needed.
