The data are kinship term usages reported by a hundred Grand Valley Dani. If the data are reduced to just the obvious focal uses of each term, a formal analysis can be made which reveals an elegant structure dominated by the criterion of moiety membership. But this paper is concerned with the implications of trying to account for all the variation (and errors) present in the unexpurgated set of data. This non-formal analysis shows that there is great unevenness in the fabric of this kinship realm. Some terms are highly focused, others are very diffuse; some terms are often extended to non-kin, others are not; some genealogical positions have many synonymous terms, others do not. The moiety criterion is often overridden. And there is considerable disagreement among the hundred informants
