This paper extends knowledge on postcolonial childhoods to examine how girls living in a Delhi informal settlement resist everyday forms violence as they fulfill their care-work responsibilities and ensure the social reproduction of their families. As girls take the lead in negotiating local 'fights' for water, they develop an oppositional consciousness to resist the social and material conditions of their lives. By using care-work as a site for resistance, girls demonstrate how struggles for water at a local government tank are not merely about material survival, but concomitantly and unequivocally about demands for dignity, justice and respect
