Negotiating Reproductive Outcomes in Uganda

This is a valuable study not only because of what it tells us about how couples reproduction in Uganda but more importantly because of its insights about the complexities that surround sexual relationships in all societies, as well as the example it sets for future research in this area. Further analyses are planned and much sophisticated analysis will be possible with the data that have been collected. The full text of the survey instruments, which are printed with annotation in an appendix, provides many useful ideas for future field studies in other contexts. The study had three main objectives, the first of which is fulfilled with the publication of this report, namely: (1) to examine how reproductive decisions and their outcomes are negotiated within sexual unions, (2) to determine which characteristics of individual, household and community influence the negotiation process and (3) to investigate how the position of women influences their ability to negotiate the outcomes they desire. The study was conducted in urban and rural settings in two districts of Uganda-Lira and Masaka-that differ from each other significantly.
