velopment psychologists, particularly during the last dozen years. In reference to Piaget, one almost immediately thinks of mathematics and science because the tasks that he devised for his investigations usually have a mathematics or science base. Here we shall be concerned with the implementation of Piagetian research in an elementary school mathematics program. Why are certain experiences recommended for preschool children, while others are recommended for the middle grades? The answer may be found in the stages of cognitive development postulated by Piaget. Replication studies by psychologists in several countries have verified Piaget's postulates. One well-established finding is that the stages a child goes through have an invariant order. Piaget holds that every child, no matter what culture he grows up in or what environment he encounters, will go through these stages in the same order. However, it is still an open question whether within a stage the order of certain sequences is also invariant. Several studies indicate that there is variability among children in the order within a stage. Neverthe
