The tiny uninhabited island of Rockall, less than 20 m high, situated in the Atlantic Ocean about 300 km west of St. Kilda, has been formally part of the United Kingdom since 1955. Except with the aid of helicopters, landings are very difficult. In 1971, the summit of the rock was removed to enable an automatic navigation light to be installed in 1972. From information obtained on these and earlier visits, and air photographs, Mr. G. S. Holland has constructed in the Royal Geographical Society's Drawing Office the first contoured map of Rockall
