Using Maxine Hong Kingston's The Woman Warrior and R. Zamora Linmark's Rolling the R's, this article argues for the theoretical possibilities produced in moving away from Racial Melancholia as a “strong” hermeneutic to analyzing Asian American subjectivity. By deploying other psychoanalytic frames such as Melanie Klein's notion of envy, and returning to scenes in both works that have been read through melancholia, it explores other idealizations Asian Americans practice as they destabilize and negotiate “raced” identity
