Political Alienation, Participation, and Ethnicity

Political alienation is analyzed as feelings of political estrangement and political powerlessness. Data collected in Nairobi, Kenya, show very different social and attitudinal bases for each orientation. In addition, a controlled comparison of the two major ethnic groups in the city, the Kikuyu and Luo, indicates the importance of social structure for understanding the different mechanisms working within subgroups in a population to explain the relationship between estrangement/powerlessness and participation. Finally, an effort is made to identify conceptual variables represented by the proper names of the ethnic groups in explaining the between-group differences
