Sources of Citizen Attitudes toward Government Race Policy

It appears that there is no clear correspondence between American whites' disposition toward government race policies and their attitudes toward blacks or toward the federal government. In this article, Richard Merriman and Wayne Parent suggest that Americans who regard society as a competitive, and fair, marketplace, in which the government's proper role is only to facilitate competition among individuals, are likely to oppose most race policies. But those who are not committed to such a view of society will tend to support them
