Although initially commissioned as a summary of and comment on the other papers in this collection, the following essay in fact represents a working out of the author's own ideas with reference to not only the accompanying studies but also other recent research on East African history as well as suggestions for studies which have not yet been undertaken. The excuse for such license is that the accompanying papers do not share any explicit common theme other than the location of their subject matter in time and more or less contiguous space.
